Letter: Gaza: West’s hypocrisy on democracy exposed

Sir, If the genocide in Gaza (and that’s what it is—a genocide, not a “war” or “conflict”) has taught me anything, it is that democracy in the West is a myth. Because democracy isn’t just the “rule of the majority,” it’s the right to choose, and to choose, there must be different options.

But there is no “left” or “right” politics when it comes to supporting Israel unconditionally.

As demonstrated by the Labour Party both here and in Australia, and of course in the USA, where the Democrat Administration has blocked every UN call for a ceasefire. Resolutions backed by 90% of the nation-states on earth. So, there is no democracy on a domestic or international level.

Sir, Hundreds of thousands of people have been demonstrating in London and other parts of the country in support of peace and a ceasefire in Palestine. Instead of supporting such a noble cause, our former Home Secretary Suella Braverman and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s government have created division in the country by demonising the protests.

Braverman called the demonstrations a ‘hate march’, which created hatred against Muslims. She accused the marchers of antisemitism and “valorization terrorism,” despite evidence that only a handful of people were involved in such acts.

I believe the reason for such a response from the government is because they did not want any public show of support for Palestinians, peace, or a ceasefire.

Yours,
Mohammed Shah
London
