A man accused of driving a vehicle involved in a hit-and-run attack that left a Muslim woman injured in south-east London appeared in court via video link from prison.
Brennan Mongan, 31, of Sewell Road, Abbey Wood, appeared via video link at Woolwich Crown Court on May 28 in the first hearing since his arrest.
Following an investigation by the Metropolitan Police, Mongan has been charged with grievous bodily harm with intent, dangerous driving, criminal damage to a motor vehicle and other driving offences.
It remains unclear what the alleged motive was behind the incident, and Mongan has yet to enter a formal plea in relation to any of the charges.
Speaking during a brief hearing on May 28 at Woolwich Crown Court, Mongan said that due to an administrative error he had been unable to secure legal representation, prompting the judge to adjourn proceedings until June 18.
On March 8, police were called by the London Ambulance Service after reports that a woman had been struck by a car and that the driver had fled the scene on Harrow Manorway, Abbey Wood, south-east London.
A manhunt was launched following the March 8 incident, with footage showing a car striking a Muslim woman at speed before driving away, in what was feared to be a targeted attack.
The woman, aged in her 20s, was sent “flying” across the street and over the bonnet of the vehicle. She was taken to hospital following the incident on March 8, where her condition was not deemed to be life-threatening or life-changing. She has since been discharged and continues to be supported by police.
The Metropolitan Police later confirmed Mongan as the alleged driver after he was arrested in Scotland on March 25. He was charged following the investigation.
He appeared at Carlisle Magistrates’ Court on March 28 and was remanded in custody.
