Palestine: 29 Palestinians killed, incl 6 children by Israeli indiscriminate bombing in Gaza

Gaza, Palestine, (AA and Agencies): Indiscriminate bombing by Israel has killed 29 Palestinians, including six children; more than 250 people have been injured, according the Palestinian Health ministry Sunday. UK has supported Israel on its airstrikes against Gaza, saying Israel is “right to defend itself” despite the bombing by Israel was unprovoked.

The Palestinian Energy Authority in the Gaza Strip announced the suspension of the only power plant at 12 pm Saturday, for not being able to supply fuel to the station, due to the continued closure of the Israeli occupation of the Karam Abu Salem crossing.

Foreign Secretary of the UK, Liz Truss, blamed Palestinians and claimed Israelis were killed too. No Israeli has been killed in the retaliation by the Palestinians.

“We condemn terrorist groups firing at civilians and violence which has resulted in casualties on both sides,” she said in a tweet. There was no mention of the 5-year-old child killed by Israeli bombing when she made the statement.

An explosion in the Jabalia refugee camp, north of Gaza City, killed four of the six children after an explosion, according to media reports

The Israeli army claimed on Twitter that the deadly situation in the camp emerged after a “misfire” from an Islamic Jihad rocket

“We did not conduct any activities in Jabaliya at the time of the event,” it said.

Palestinian groups have yet to comment about the explosion.

At least seven people were killed in an Israeli attack on Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip, local authorities said on Sunday.

Seven dead bodies, including a boy and two women, were recovered from the rubble of a building that was targeted by Israel, said Hamas-run Interior Ministry spokesman Iyad al-Buzum.

Meanwhile, Al-Quds Brigades said in a statement that Khaled Mansour, a senior leader of the Islamic Jihad group, was killed in the attack.

The attacks came amid rising tensions across Palestinian territories since Monday, when Israeli forces detained Bassam al-Saadi, a senior leader of Islamic Jihad, in a raid in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin. Islamic Jihad did not retaliate on the arrest.

Israeli warplanes launched airstrikes in the area citing an “imminent threat of attack” by the Islamic Jihad group.

The EU on Saturday called for restraint from all sides to avoid further escalation and casualties in the Gaza Strip.

“The EU calls for maximum restraint on all sides in order to avoid a further escalation and further casualties,” in and around Gaza, the lead spokesperson of the bloc’s diplomatic service, Peter Stano, said in a statement.

The text pointed out that the bloc “follows with great concern” the ongoing escalation which “has already led to a number of casualties, with a number of people killed, including civilians and a five-year-old Palestinian girl.”

Stano acknowledged Israel’s right to protect its civilian population but warned that a “broader conflict” with more causalities and suffering on both sides should be avoided.

South Africa strongly condemned on Saturday the Israeli attacks on the Gaza strip.

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) said it is concerned that Israeli military statements indicate that the operation would “take a long time” and that ongoing attacks continue to place innocents at severe risk.

“Attacks that kill innocent civilians have no justification, and they are more abhorrent as they are committed by an occupying power which has besieged the Gaza Strip for over a decade in contravention of international law,” said DIRCO.

“The international community has an obligation to ensure that international law is not violated intely and to urgently stop the Israeli occupation forces repeated attacks against civilians, especially women and children as well as the illegal blockade in Gaza,” it said.

It added that the killing of children by the Israeli government must be urgently addressed.

“The UN Secretary-General’s report on Children in Armed Conflict states that there has been an alarming increase in grave violations against children, particularly the significant rise in the killing and maiming of children in the Occupied Palestinian Territory by Israeli forces during hostilities, air strikes on densely populated areas and the use of live ammunition during law enforcement operations,” it added.
