Iraq: 4 police killed in suicide bombing in Samarra

By Ali Cevad-Muhammed Abdulaziz

SAMARRA, (AA): At least four police officers were killed here in a suicide attack in Samarra, a military source told Anadolu Agency on Tuesday.

A pair of bombers wearing vests raided a police station and blew themselves up during a clash with officers, said Saladin Operations Commander Saad Muhammad.

Muhammad confirmed the deaths of the officers and said Iraqi forces have imposed a curfew in the city following the bombings.

Two other suicide bombers who had planned a separate attack were killed near the police station, he said.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, but Iraqi officials typically blame such attacks on the Daesh terror group.

Iraq has suffered a devastating security vacuum since mid-2014 when Daesh captured the northern city of Mosul — now the target of a wide-ranging army offensive — and overran vast swathes of territory in the country’s north and west.

Approximately 58,000 victims nationwide have been since killed in sporadic violence, according to UN figures.
