Sir, The front page and editorials for March 24 were full of the consequences of fear and hatred. The sad fact is that we live in a very imperfect world.
Since Biblical and Qur’anic times, there has been violence prompted by faith or lack of faith. Some consider that their religion is better than others, and some think that all religions are false illusions (the opium of the people, according to Marx).
In my lifetime, the Nazis slaughtered and tried to eliminate Jews, while the Communists killed and starved Christians and others. Even today, Buddhists kill and expel Muslims and drive out some Christians.
In the Middle East, some religious leaders of Muslim culture persecute Yezidis, Bahais, and some Christian traditions.
Tolerance and non-violence are rare virtues that faithful people should strive to promote.
Can we all become patient, acknowledging that God loves human beings, made in His own image? Can we change our hearts to become apprentices of creation, willing to cooperate to prevent our extinction? Muslims are not the only victims. Islamophobia is not the only fear that stalks the world.
Let us, therefore, unite in a fraternity (which includes our sisters and daughters) across all frontiers and human divisions.
Yours,
Lord Hylton
