Letter —A Muslim survivor’s memories of the Gujarat riots

Sir, I read with interest the letter titled “International indifference to human rights abuses in India” by Ms Aisha Mohamed (25 September, The Muslim News).

I am grateful to her for speaking up for helpless and persecuted Muslims living in the UK and India. I am one of those who suffered during the post-Godhra riots in Gujarat in 2002.

On 1 March 2002, I was forced to flee my ancestral home, where my family had lived for three generations. Had I not fled, I do not know what might have happened to me. Even today, my entire body trembles when I remember those terrible days.

I salute Ms Aisha Mohamed for her exemplary courage. May her tribe increase.

Yours,
Farooq Abdulgafar Bawani
Rajkot, Gujarat, India
