The Prime Minister of Canada and the leader of Ontario’s Liberal Party have condemned the recent hate-motivated graffiti at a mosque in the province.

Waterloo Regional Police responded to anti-Muslim graffiti at the Islamic Centre of Cambridge on Monday, February 12 at approximately 4 p.m. They say the graffiti included hate-motivated symbols. Police suspect the incident happened between 8 p.m. on Sunday, February 11 and the time they were notified.

The remnants of a swastika could be seen on a pillar outside the Centre. The graffiti attracted the attention of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who visited the centre back in April 2022.

“The vandalism at the Islamic Centre of Cambridge — and the rise in Islamophobia across the country — is alarming, abhorrent, and unacceptable,” wrote Trudeau on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“I strongly condemn this incident and stand with Muslim communities against such hate. We must confront and combat Islamophobia together.”

“I’m upset to hear of vandalism at a mosque in Cambridge. Islamophobia is completely contrary to our values as Canadians,” Ontario Liberal Leader Bonnie Crombie wrote on X. “We need to all stand against hate in all its forms. Hateful incidents must stop and those breaking the law must be held to account.”
