On September 9 two American companies have admitted to planning to export misbranded halal products.
Food distributor Midamar Corp and halal meat certifiers Islamic Services of America (ISA) also pleaded guilty to making false statements on export certificates on beef products for sale in Asia and elsewhere.
The Iowa based companies each entered guilty pleas in federal court in Cedar Rapids to one count of conspiracy to make false statements on export certificates, sell misbranded meat and commit wire fraud, among other offences.
Each company must forfeit £390,000 in proceeds derived from the scheme.
ISA is one of the few organisations approved to certify beef for import into Malaysia, Indonesia, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and UAE.
