Mixed Martial Arts

According to media reports UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov is “done” fighting in Las Vegas, according to his manager Ali Abdelaziz, after Nevada Athletic Commission meeting on January 29. Nurmagomedov was suspended nine months (which could be reduced to six) and fined $500,000 for his involvement in the UFC 229 post-fight brawl last October.

Nurmagomedov unhappy with the one-year suspensions and $25,000 fines given to his teammates Zubaira Tukhugov and Abubakar Nurmagomedov for their roles in the infamous brawl, which followed Nurmagomedov’s submission win over Conor McGregor. As per the report, Nurmagomedov does not plan to return to the cage until the suspensions of his teammates are over. Tukhugov and Abubakar are eligible to fight October 6 retroactive to the day of UFC 229. Nurmagomedov, however, is technically eligible to fight on July 6 and that could be changed to April if he agrees to enroll in an anti-bullying program. Nurmagomedov wants to fight at New York City’s Madison Square Garden in November.

Swimming

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) stripped Malaysia of the 2019 World Para Swimming Championships because Kuala Lumpur said it would not let Israeli athletes participate.

According to a statement issued by the IPC on January 27, the decision was made at a meeting of its governing board in London, after Malaysia “failed to provide the necessary guarantees that Israeli para swimmers could participate, free from discrimination and safely in the championships.” The championships were due to be held in Kuching between July 29 and August 4. Earlier this month, Malaysia’s cabinet decided that Israelis would not be allowed to enter the country for any event.
