4th Jan 2014

KARACHI, (Dawn): At least 11 people were killed in different incidents of violence in Karachi on Saturday, DawnNews reported.

Unknown gunmen opened indiscriminate fire at a juice shop near Maskan Chowrangi in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, killing the shop owner and two other people whereas four others sustained severe injuries in the attack and were shifted to a private hospital for treatment.

[According to Geo News, the Sindh Rangers claimed on Saturday that political party was behind the recent killings in Karachi that have claimed ten lives in the last 24 hours.

According to the Rangers spokesman the evidence collected so far hints at the involvement of a political party, adding that it is an attempt to create instability in the country’s financial hub.

The spokesman further added that those behind the heinous killings would be apprehended soon.]

According to the police, Maskan Chowrangi and adjacent areas were being targeted by the group which perpetrated the attack. Shopkeepers have been instructed to close their shops at midnight.

Residents of the area claimed there was a sharp increase in incidents of targeted killings in the area and that police had failed to ensure their safety.

Separately, two madressah students were gunned down at Nipa Chowrangi, following which protesters blocked roads and burned tyres.

Meanwhile, two brothers were shot in Karachi’s Gulshan-e-Iqbal area. The funeral prayers for the deceased persons were offered in Shafiq Colony.

A man was shot dead near Indus Plaza in the city’s Federal-B area whereas two people were killed in the areas of Gulshan-e-Hadeed and Golimar.

A police officer, who sustained injuries due to firing in Sachal Goth near Super Highway earlier today, died in a hospital.

Karachi, the largest metropolitan city of Pakistan, is riddled with targeted killings, gang wars, kidnappings for ransom, extortion and terrorism. Targeted operations led by Rangers’ forces with the support of police are ongoing in the city under a directive issued by the federal government against criminals already identified by federal, military and civilian agencies.
