Rt Hon Justine Greening, MP, Secretary of State for International Development:
I wish Eid Mubarak to Muslims in Britain and across the globe who are celebrating the end of Ramadan.
It is a special moment following an important period of reflection for Muslims everywhere and our thoughts at this time are with the many people suffering unimaginable hardship around the world. The number of Syrian refugees has passed four million, many Iraqis live in fear of ISIL brutality and millions face starvation in Yemen.
The UK will continue to stand by those whose lives have been shattered. Our recent pledges of more humanitarian aid in response to these crises – including food, medicine, and shelter – will give millions of people affected some of the essentials they so desperately need.
