RAMALLAH, Palestine (AA & Imemc): A Palestinian worker was shot dead by Israeli army fire in south of Qalqilia, the occupied West Bank on Sunday, according to the Health Ministry.

A ministry statement said the worker was shot while trying to cross through an Israeli separation barrier Jaljulia gate  to reach his workplace inside Israel.

The victim’s body is still withheld by Israeli forces at a hospital in Kefar Saba in central Israel, the statement said.

The Palestinian Health Ministry said the soldiers fatally shot Nabil Ahmad Taiseer Ghanem, 53, from Sorra village, southwest of Nablus.

The Israeli Army Radio confirmed that soldiers had opened fire on the Palestinian man as he attempted to cross through the barrier into Israel.

The Israeli army claimed the soldiers fired live rounds at Ahmad when he reportedly “attempted to damage a section of the Wall” but failed to provide any details of the allegation.

Eyewitnesses refuted the military’s allegations and said dozens of Palestinian workers were trying to cross the gate of the Annexation Wall when the soldiers fired at them to force them to leave, although they carried permits to cross.

In 2002, under then-Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, Israel built a barrier on occupied Palestinian land with the ostensible aim of preventing Palestinian attacks inside Israel. Palestinians, for their part, refer to the barrier as the “apartheid wall”.

The soldiers also attacked Palestinian workers near the Taybeh military roadblock, southwest of Tulkarem in the northern West Bank, and fired gas bombs at them, causing dozens to suffer the effects of tear gas inhalation.

Thousands of Palestinians use holes in the wall to reach their workplaces in Israel to avoid crowdedness at Israeli checkpoints or due to lack of work permits in Israel.
