Lebanon: Massive explosions in Beirut kills dozens, injures hundreds

Beirut, Lebanon (The Muslim News):  According to local media,dozens of people have reportedly been killed, hundreds injured, due to massive explosions in Beirut, Tuesday afternoon.

 

The cause of the blasts is unknown.

 

Lebanese LBC television channel quoted Public Health Minister, Hamad Hasan, that very high number of people have been injured in the blasts.

 

The explosions caused widespread damage, destroying buildings and vehicles in the area.The explosions could be felt as far as Cyprus according to tweets by residents in the country.

 

Beirut governor Marwan Abboud calls the explosion a national disaster and compares it to the Hiroshima and Nagasaki attacks. “Beirut is a disaster city and the scale of the damage is enormous” and called the blast a “national disaster akin to Hiroshima.”

 

People in Lebanon have been tweeting on the extent of the explosions.

 

@Beltrew: “Absolute chaos in #Beirut. Shattered shop fronts, injured people staggering around, alarms going off, ambulances trying to get to hospitals, the floor is glistening with shattered glass. In all my years of covering wars I have never experienced a blast like this. #Lebanon…My flat is completely destroyed. Not just windows blown in- like door and window frames ripped out. The cats are alive thank god.”

 

@amalsaad_lb : “An explosion in Beirut shattered our windows. My family and I literally thought our house was being shelled.”

 

Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan,  tweeted from London: “Truly horrifying images coming from Beirut. I am sure I speak for all Londoners when I say our thoughts and prayers are with the city and its residents.”

 

Leader of the UK Labour Party, Keir Starmer, tweeted: “The images of explosions in Beirut are deeply worrying. Our thoughts are with those affected, the emergency services and the people of Lebanon.”
