Canada: PM Trudeau decries spate of Islamophobic attacks

By Barry Ellsworth

TRENTON, Ontario (AA): Canada’s prime minister on Wednesday condemned recent “acts of hatred and racism” in Canada in the wake of the recent deadly attacks in Paris.

In a statement released from the Philippines where he is attending a regional summit, Justin Trudeau made reference to violence against places of worship and a Muslim woman in the province of Ontario.

“I have noted with deep regret a number of highly disturbing acts aimed at certain Canadians, including the first at the mosque in Peterborough, the smashing of windows at a Hindu temple in Kitchener and the attack on a Muslim woman in Toronto,” he said, noting the acts are in contradiction to Canadian values.

“Diversity is Canada’s strength,” Trudeau continued. “These vicious and senseless acts of intolerance have no place in our country and run absolutely contrary to Canadian values of pluralism and acceptance.”

Montreal police on Wednesday arrested a 24-year-old man who is alleged to have posted a video on YouTube. Wearing a Joker mask, the person mentioned the Paris attacks last week and threatened that one Arab would be murdered each week in Quebec – a francophone province with close ties to France.

In other incidents, the words “Muslims Go Home” were scrawled on the wall of a Toronto apartment complex.

Near that same area, a woman wearing a hijab was attacked and robbed Monday as she attempted to pick her son up after school, CTV News reported. Two Caucasian males pulled at her headscarf, hurled racial slurs and took off with her money and cellphone after the assault.

In Peterborough, the city’s only mosque was set on fire Sunday. An online fundraising drive set up to repair the facility quickly exceeded its $107,000 fundraising goal, taking in $110,536 when it concluded Wednesday.

At the Hindu temple in Kitchener, members said they believe the temple was mistaken for Islamic.

Trudeau said the government and police would continue to protect victims’ rights and he asked Canadians to unite, not divide, in the face of global terrorism threats.

“Our focus must be on stopping the people responsible for the terror and continuing to fight hate by embracing Canadian values,”
