Austria: Dozens migrants found dead in truck on Austrian highway

ANKARA (AA): The bodies of up to 50 people were found in the back of a container truck on an Austrian highway close to the Hungarian border on Thursday, local media said.

Police spokesman Hans Peter Doskozil, speaking at a news conference with Interior Minister Johanna Mikl-Leitner, said at least 30 bodies were found on the parking strip of the A4 highway in Burgenland state in eastern Austria, newspaper Die Presse said.

He warned the death toll could increase as investigators examine the remains, which are said to be in an advanced state of decomposition.

Referring to the case as a “terrible crime”, Doskozil said the cause of death was still being ascertained.

Die Presse reported the 7.5-ton truck had been parked along the highway, which runs from Nickelsdorf on the Hungarian border to Vienna, since at least Wednesday.

“Today is a dark day and our thoughts are with the victims, the families of the victims and also with the friends…This tragedy makes us all concerned,” Mikl-Leitner said.

Austrian police have contacted their Hungarian counterparts and set up a crisis unit.

Thousands of migrants cross from Turkey every month to travel up the Balkans, passing through Greece, Macedonia, Serbia and Hungary. Many cross from Hungary to Austria, where they apply for asylum or continue their journey to Germany, France or other western EU states.
