US House Speaker endorses Donald Trump

WASHINGTON (AA): House Speaker Paul Ryan on Thursday endorsed presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump for president.

“Donald Trump can help us make it a reality,” Ryan wrote in an op-ed piece in the Janesville Gazette, noting that with Republican colleagues he would soon introduce a series of policy proposals that “address the American people’s top priorities”.

Ryan acknowledged that like many Republicans he also “faced a big question” about Trump’s nomination but pointed out that a Republican White House would mean a president ready to sign bills from a Republican-led Congress.

The Republican establishment has tried to stop Trump for months as they dismissed his policy proposals such as banning Muslims from entering the U.S. and the deportation of undocumented migrants as an embarrassment to the party.

“It’s no secret that he and I have our differences,” Ryan wrote of Trump. “I won’t pretend otherwise. And when I feel the need to, I’ll continue to speak my mind. But the reality is, on the issues that make up our agenda, we have more common ground than disagreement.”

Ryan was one of the most resistive Republicans in Congress against Trump’s nomination and there had been rumors that the party’s establishment had offered him to step up against Trump — a proposal the Speaker declined.

The Wisconsin representative wrote that he was encouraged by his conversations with Trump about a policy platform that billionaire would provide to the Republican-led Congress and the list of potential Supreme Court nominees that the real estate mogul released last month.

Ryan also warned Republicans about Democratic hopeful Hillary Clinton. “A Clinton White House would mean four more years of liberal cronyism and a government more out for itself than the people it serves,” he said. “Quite simply, she represents all that our agenda aims to fix”.
