MOGADISHU, (AA): At least 11 people were killed in Somalia’s southern port city of Kismayo on Saturday in a suicide bomb attack that targeted a military camp, according to a local security official.
Ahmed Hassan, a police officer based in Kismayo, said that a suicide bomber blew himself up in his car, killing at least 11 people, including ten soldiers.
Dozens of others were injured, he added.
The Al-Shabaab militant group has since claimed responsibility for the attack.
Over the course of the last year, Al-Shabaab has suffered a number of significant blows.
The group has lost most of its strongholds in southern and central Somalia to Somali government troops and African Union (AU) forces, which include personnel from Uganda, Ethiopia, Kenya, Burundi and Djibouti.
Established in 2004 and ideologically aligned with Al-Qaeda, Al-Shabaab is an armed movement that calls for the application of Islamic Law in Somalia.
