Burundi: US calls for end to violence in Burundi

BUJUMBURA,  (AA): The United States has called on all Burundians to end the ongoing violence plaguing the country since April.

U.S. ambassador in Burundi, Dawn Liberi, released Thursday a statement on the occasion of Human Rights Day urging all Burundians “to uphold the universal human rights which will put Burundi back on the path of peace and prosperity”.

“On this Human Rights Day, I urge all Burundians to stop the violence that is hindering universal access to human rights and act in a spirit of unity to bring peace back to this nation,” she added.

On Wednesday, seven people were killed in Bujumbura, in politically related violence.

Burundi has been gripped by instability since April when the ruling party named President Pierre Nkurunziza — in power since 2005 — as its candidate for the presidency.

Mostly opposition supporters, but those of Nkurunziza as well, have been killed amid the turmoil.

According to the UN, at least 240 people have been killed in Burundi since the outbreak of the political and security crisis in April 2015.
