WASHINGTON (AA): At least 16 people have died and five others are missing after a flash flood hit near the Utah-Arizona state line, authorities confirmed to Anadolu Agency late Tuesday.
The quick moving system Monday swept away two vehicles, including a van carrying 16 passengers, according to Kevin Barlow, assistant fire chief in Hildale, Utah.
Twelve of those were killed in the van included at least six children and three women, said officials.
Emergency public information officer Joe Dougherty told Anadolu Agency that one person from the group is still missing and three others survived the flood.
It is believed the victims were returning from a park in the area when the flash flood hit.
“This hit with a vengeance we haven’t seen for some time,” fire chief Barlow said.
In a separate accident form the same flash system, three other people died and four are still missing at a small canyon in Utah’s Zion National Park.
The group of seven individuals were at the park to explore canyons, according to the park’s statement.
The search continues for the missing four hikers.
Utah Gov. Gary Herbert extended condolences to the families of the victims on Utah’s official twitter account.
“I am heartbroken to hear of the recent tragedy in Washington County,” he said, thanking first responders, volunteers and other officials involved in the recovery effort.
The floods occurred following heavy rains in the canyons just north of Colorado City, Arizona, and Hildale.
More more than a centimeter (0.5 inches) of rain is expected in the area Tuesday, according to forecasts.
