MEXICO CITY (AA): A mother and her five children were killed Thursday when a hillside collapsed in a mudslide in the eastern state of Veracruz, according to officials.

The family was inside one of two homes that was washed away in the town of Xilomichi, located in a mountainous area.

At least one person was rescued and Mexican forces have recovered the bodies of the dead, officials said.

The region has experienced heavy rain in the past two days that led to the collapse.

Authorities have asked residents of the region to take precautions against more landslides even if the tropical system moves out of the area.
