A bombshell report by NBC News has claimed that US military bases across the Middle East were hit far harder by Iranian strikes than publicly admitted by the Trump Administration.

Citing multiple US officials and congressional aides, the report suggests the true scale of destruction has been downplayed, with the eventual repair bill expected to run into billions of dollars.

“American military bases and other equipment in the Persian Gulf region suffered extensive damage from Iranian strikes that is far worse than publicly acknowledged and is expected to cost billions of dollars to repair,” the report said.

The revelations centre on Iran’s swift retaliation following US military action on February 28, when dozens of American targets across seven Middle Eastern countries were struck in a coordinated assault.

According to officials quoted in the report, the attacks hit key military infrastructure, including warehouses, command headquarters, aircraft hangars, runways, advanced radar systems and satellite communications networks, as well as damaging dozens of aircraft.

“The Iranian regime swiftly retaliated after the Trump administration attacked on Feb. 28, hitting dozens of targets across US military bases in seven Middle East countries,” the report said, citing officials and an assessment that includes analysis from the American Enterprise Institute.

In one of the most striking incidents, an Iranian F-5 fighter jet is said to have successfully bombed Camp Buehring in Kuwait, despite the base being protected by air defence systems.

“In the initial days of the war, an Iranian F-5 fighter jet bombed the U.S. base Camp Buehring in Kuwait, despite the base having air defences,” the report said, describing it as a rare and alarming breach.

Officials added that the strike marked “the first time an enemy fixed-wing aircraft has struck an American military base in years”, raising serious questions about vulnerabilities in US defences.

The bases targeted are home to thousands of American troops and, in some cases, their families. However, many personnel had reportedly been evacuated in the run-up to the conflict, helping to limit casualties.

The findings come as scrutiny grows over the handling of information by the Pentagon, with critics accusing officials of failing to fully disclose the extent of the damage.

With tensions in the region still high, the report is likely to fuel fresh debate in Washington over transparency, military readiness and the true cost of the conflict, both financially and strategically.
