A Muslim schoolgirl was assaulted while walking home from Eastwood High School in Newton Mearns, East Renfrewshire, on September 8, prompting a hate crime investigation by Police Scotland.
According to the Newton Mearns Islamic Centre, a male assailant targeted the girl, making threatening remarks about Muslims during the attack. In response, police have increased patrols in the area to ensure the safety of residents and schoolchildren.
The Islamic Centre confirmed it is collaborating with the East Renfrewshire Muslim Forum to support the girl’s family. Officials have also engaged local councillors, the Member of Parliament, and the East Renfrewshire Council Director of Education to ensure a thorough investigation and to hold the perpetrator accountable.
The attack has raised broader concerns about community safety. A previous incident on Harvie Avenue in July 2024 involved the assault of a 15-year-old girl, highlighting an ongoing need for protective measures. The Islamic Centre has urged authorities to consider additional security around schools and local areas frequented by children.
A spokesperson stressed the importance of treating Islamophobic incidents seriously, noting: “These incidents must be recognised as hate crimes and dealt with accordingly. We ask parents and community members to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to local mosques.”
Police Scotland confirmed that inquiries are ongoing. “Officers have received a report of a hate crime near Harvie Avenue and are carrying out increased patrols in the area,” said a spokesperson.
The Newton Mearns Islamic Centre and local authorities continue to work together to ensure the community is supported and measures are taken to prevent further incidents.
