Nutrition: Maximising your health during Ramadan

Ramadan is a time for spiritual reflection and self-discipline. Proper nutrition plays a crucial role in supporting these efforts. Here are some tips from me, a registered nutritionist, to maximise your health during Ramadan:

Tip 1: Balanced Suhoor

Things can get tiring during Ramadan, but it is important not to skip Suhoor as it plays a pivotal role in sustaining energy throughout the day.

Consider what you are eating for Suhoor. My general rule of thumb is to incorporate a mix of complex carbohydrates, protein, fruits, and vegetables, and healthy fats. The combination of these food groups will help sustain your blood sugar levels for longer, providing energy for a more extended period.

An example of a balanced Suhoor can be porridge oats (carbohydrates) with some peanut butter and crushed nuts (protein and healthy fats), along with some sliced fruit of your choice.

Tip 2: Mindful Iftar

One thing many people struggle with is how to break their fast (iftar). Often, we are quite hungry just before iftar, so when it’s time to break the fast, it is easy to eat a lot in a short period.

Remember, our brains take at least 15-20 minutes to register fullness cues, so it is important to slow down and be more mindful.

You may intend to have just one samosa, but it ends up being 4-5 samosas before you even get to your main meal because your body is still telling you that you are very hungry.

Tip 3: Get moving

Try to incorporate movement into your schedule during Ramadan. Rigorous exercise can be challenging, but including low-impact activities like walking, stretching, or gentle yoga during this month can promote overall well-being. These activities can also have a positive impact on mood and energy levels.
