Persecution of Muslims in India

28th Feb 2020

Sir, Your extensive coverage of the situation of Muslims in India is welcome. I did not realise that the new citizenship act and register of citizens will affect mainly Muslims, leading them to be expelled from the country. (‘Muslims face an existential threat in India.’ The Muslim News. 31 January 2020)
However, what is heartening to know is that thousands of people, mainly students of all backgrounds, have come out in support of the Muslims and against the draconian legislations. It seems the ruling party, BJP’s Hindutva ideology is slowly being rejected and hopefully, this will lead to their defeat.
Unfortunately, even though a few Bollywood stars have come out publicly in support of the students, the majority are still supporting the BJP’s poisonous ideology.
What has been the unique feature in the protests is the involvement of the older generation Muslim women who have come out for the first time to fight for their rights. I pray the situation improves not only for Muslims in India but also in Jammu and Kashmir where they have been brutally suppressed.
Yours,
Malik Shah
