Sir, Why is Prime Minister Keir Starmer reluctant not only to adopt a definition of Islamophobia agreed by Muslim communities, but even to accept the term “Islamophobia” itself, despite its long-standing use by Muslims and academics in the UK and internationally?
The term has been in use for decades. Yet while Labour figures, along with sections of the right-wing press, readily accept a definition of antisemitism developed in consultation with the Jewish community, similar recognition is denied to Muslims. This double standard only reinforces the perception that Islamophobia remains deeply entrenched across both the Labour and Conservatives.
Yours,
Sarah Ahmed
