A Muslim woman was physically attacked and Islamophobically abused by Scottish teenagers at an underground station in Ibrox, Glasgow.
The 50-year-old woman, who wears a hijab, was allegedly surrounded by a group who shouted Islamophobic and classist insults in the harrowing incident around 1.30pm on January 10 near Ibrox. Her abuse included one man allegedly ‘pushing her around’ before hitting her on the face with a plank of wood. Following the assault, in an attempt to identify the attackers, the woman’s daughter posted the following on her Instagram.
‘This group of teenagers cornered and attacked my Hijabi 50-year-old mother at 1.50pm whilst shouting Islamophobic and classist slurs…. After pushing her around the male photographed in the next slide with his finger up hit her on the front of her head/face with a plank and wood and left her injured. Please help us find them/share. This isn’t the first time something like this has happened,’ wrote the victim’s daughter.
Photographs taken moments after the attack show a group of youths in what appears to be a school uniform. The camera can be seen showing two females wearing skirts as they try to hide their identities. One has their hood up with a black jacket and black bag while the other is wearing a light coloured bag and a black jacket with long brown hair.
At least two more people, believed to be boys, are also seen covering their faces with their hoods. One is avoiding looking at the camera but sticks their finger up at the woman as they walk away. Police Scotland confirmed they were aware of the incident and said enquiries were ongoing.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Police received a report of a woman having been verbally abused and assaulted around 1.30 pm on Monday, 10 January 2022, near to Ibrox subway station by a group of youths. The woman did not require any medical attention.’
