A Muslim community network group based across Dewsbury and Wakefield has helped to raise £170,000 in support of the MY Hospitals Charity’s MRI Appeal campaign.

The money has been raised by Muslims for MRI – a network comprising 60 local mosques, as well as businesses, charities and individuals – whose efforts have contributed to the completion of a new MRI suite at Pinderfields Hospital, part of the Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust.

Launched to improve diagnostic services across the Trust, the MRI Appeal aimed to fund advanced scanning equipment to reduce waiting times and enhance patient outcomes across the region. The community campaign surpassed its original £150,000 target, demonstrating the collective generosity of the area’s Muslim population.

The initiative emerged after representatives from several mosques and community groups came together to ask how they could give back to the NHS.

“It was agreed that we ALL need to work together and contribute for the benefit of the whole community,” stated the group’s GoFundMe page.

A celebratory event was held at Pinderfields in April, where NHS staff and charity representatives warmly welcomed members of Muslims for MRI. Attendees were given a guided tour of the now-operational MRI suite and shown a commemorative plaque that will be installed to honour their contribution.

Keith Ramsay, Chair of MY Hospitals Charity and the Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust, praised the initiative, “We are incredibly grateful to all those involved in the Muslims for MRI campaign for their outstanding support.
“Their efforts have directly contributed to the creation of a modern, efficient MRI suite that will benefit thousands of patients each year. This is a true example of community generosity making a tangible difference.”

Iqbal Bhana, a representative of Muslims for MRI, added, “We are humbled and proud to support such an important cause. This project brought people together from all walks of life to support the NHS, and it’s a moment of pride for our community to see the results of that unity and compassion.”

The campaign comes at a time when sections of the media have stoked controversy around NHS Muslim staff networks, despite such groups being a common part of NHS inclusion structures. The success of Muslims for MRI offers a powerful and timely counter-narrative—highlighting how British Muslims are contributing meaningfully to public life and the health of their communities.

Now fully operational, the new MRI suite is delivering faster and more accurate diagnostic imaging to patients—standing as a lasting testament to the power of community-led action.
