Afghanistan and global power balance

Afghanistan and global power balance

Sir, You featured two excellent articles on the situation in Afghanistan in the September 24 issue of The Muslim News.

Dr Hassan Abbas argues that the US-led invasion of Afghanistan failed because US interest was diverted to Iraq and lost its focus on Afghanistan and let the Taliban take control of the country.
While Mushahid Hussain argues the US should pro-actively engage with the three countries pivotal to

Afghanistan’s future and regional stability – Iran, Pakistan and China.
However, I believe the US has washed its hands of Afghanistan and is more interested in the perceived threat from China. The regional countries will have to resolve the crisis in Afghanistan.

Sir, I invite your kind attention to an article published under the heading “Afghanistan debacle marks a shift in global power balance” [The Muslim News, 27 August].

The learned writer has quoted extensively from various sources. It is a well-researched article. He has given full justice to the subject. Congrats to the honourable Mr M Hussain for enriching our knowledge.

Yours,
Farooq Abdulgafar Bawani,
