Indonesia: 35 dead after floods, landslides in Central Java

TUBAN, (AA): Floods and landslides have left at least 35 people dead and 25 missing in Indonesia’s central Java province.

Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman for the national disaster management agency, told Anadolu Agency on Sunday that 16 districts and cities in Central Java had been affected, leaving hundreds of houses damaged and economic losses of billions of rupiah (millions of dollars).

“Until Sunday afternoon, the death toll due to floods and landslides in Central Java is 35 people, along with 25 missing and 14 people injured,” Nugroho said, adding that the most affected area was in Purworejo, where 19 people were killed.

The floods — caused by heavy rain since last Saturday — were predicted to fall until June 20.

“Currently, evacuation and the search of missing people is being conducted by a joint search and rescue team.”

Nugroho added that it was difficult to access many of the areas as some roads were damaged, and others were buried by the landslides.

“Unmanned aircraft are being used to assess the impact,” he added.
