DHAKA, Bangladesh(AA): The death from Tuesday’s powerful blast at a commercial building in Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka has risen to 22.
Detectives today arrested three people, including the two owners of the building in Dhaka’s Gulistan Siddik bazar area. The police officials said they were arrested as the building was built without following the relevant laws and rules. In addition, they erected shops in the basement, instead of keeping open space for parking.
The blast that took place also injured more than 100 people, including dozens with critical injuries.
The rescue operation was still ongoing as a debris was piled up on the ground floor of the multi-story building.
Speaking to Anadolu, Maj. Md Moshiour Rahman, the deputy director of the bomb disposal unit of the elite police force, said the cause of the explosion is yet to be ascertained.
“Our specialist team has confirmed that the explosion occurred in the basement of the building. It may be a sabotage or normal gas explosion or anything else,” Rahman said.
“Until the disposal of the debris, we can’t reach the basement to find out the cause of the blast,” he added.
