London, (The Muslim News): One woman was killed and nine others were injured in an Israeli airstrike on the southern Lebanese town of Maifadoun on Saturday, as Israeli forces carried out a series of airstrikes, artillery attacks and demolitions across southern Lebanon despite a US-mediated ceasefire framework.
The Lebanese Health Ministry identified the victim as an 18-year-old woman but gave no further details about the circumstances of the attack.
Eyewitness Melhem Jaber said the strike hit a populated area and that ambulance and rescue teams arrived to remove rubble and search for casualties.
Residents had been celebrating their return to the town and working to repair damaged homes and roads to encourage families to return, Jaber said.
The Maifadoun strike was among a wider series of Israeli attacks reported across southern Lebanon.
Overnight, Israeli warplanes struck areas including Nabatieh, Masouma Garden, Ali al-Taher heights and Nabatieh al-Fawqa, according to witnesses.
Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA) reported further Israeli attacks on Saturday, including airstrikes on Mansouri, south of Tyre, where two consecutive strikes targeted several homes.
The agency said the bombardment caused widespread destruction and that Israeli forces carried out several detonations on the town’s outskirts, including one involving a barrel containing powerful explosives.
Artillery fire was also reported in the Salouki and Hujair valleys in Nabatieh, while Israeli aircraft struck Kfour, completely destroying the home of late Lebanese lawmaker Habib Sadek.
The property housed an art and cultural museum, a literary and cultural library and a collection of paintings, according to NNA.
In the Marjayoun district, Israeli forces caused destruction in Bani Hayyan, while an Israeli drone was reportedly seen flying at low altitude over Beirut’s southern suburbs.
The latest attacks followed an Israeli military announcement on Friday that it had begun striking targets in southern Lebanon after what it claimed was the downing of a drone launched by Hezbollah members towards Israeli forces operating in an area Israel refers to as a “security zone”.
The escalation has continued despite an agreement between Beirut and Tel Aviv providing for a ceasefire and a gradual Israeli withdrawal under a US-mediated negotiating process.
Lebanese authorities say Israeli attacks since March have killed more than 4,000 people and injured over 12,000, while forcing more than 1 million people from their homes.
