Gaza deaths mount as Palestinian detainee isolated, US military losses in Iran war rise and Tehran signals openness to deal

LONDON, (The Muslim News): Israeli attacks killed four Palestinians, including a teenager and a civil defence medic, as Palestinian groups said journalist and administrative detainee Bushra al-Tawil had been held in isolation for 46 consecutive days.

The developments came as new US military data revealed extensive aircraft losses during the war with Iran, while Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian told Russian President Vladimir Putin that an agreement with Washington remained possible if the US respected international law.

In the latest Israeli attacks on Gaza, a Palestinian was killed and others injured when an Israeli drone struck a tent sheltering displaced people in the Al-Buraq neighbourhood, west of Khan Younis, according to a medical source at Nasser Hospital cited by Anadolu.

A Palestinian Civil Defense volunteer was killed in an Israeli airstrike while travelling to help wounded people near Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza.

The body of a 17-year-old Palestinian was brought to Nasser Hospital after he was killed in an Israeli drone strike in Qizan Abu Rashwan, south of Khan Younis. A Palestinian man in his 60s was also killed in a drone strike on the Khan Younis camp.

Several Palestinians were injured, while another teenager died from a gunshot wound to the head sustained last month when Israeli forces opened fire east of Khan Younis. A girl was also injured by Israeli gunfire directed at tents housing displaced Palestinians near the Al-Amal neighbourhood.

Anadolu reported that Israeli rubber boats advanced towards the coast of Rafah and opened fire at tents housing displaced Palestinians before withdrawing.

Israeli forces also carried out demolitions in northeastern and eastern Khan Younis and east of Gaza City’s Tuffah neighbourhood, amid heavy gunfire.

According to Palestinian figures, more than 74,000 Palestinians have been killed and more than 175,000 injured since Israel began its war on Gaza in October 2023. About 90 per cent of the enclave’s infrastructure has also been destroyed.

Although a ceasefire took effect in October 2025, Gaza’s Health Ministry says Israeli attacks have since killed more than 1,400 Palestinians and injured nearly 5,000.

Palestinian detainee held in isolation

Palestinian prisoners’ organisations said Israeli prison authorities had kept Tawil, 33, in isolation for 46 consecutive days after transferring her to the Ohalei Oz facility in Beersheba.

The Palestinian Prisoner Society, Addameer Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association, and the Palestine Liberation Organization’s Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs said she had previously been held at Neve Tirza prison in central Israel after being transferred from Damon prison in Haifa.

The organisations said repeated transfers and her continued isolation had prevented her legal team from visiting her despite several requests.

They called on international organisations, particularly the International Committee of the Red Cross, to intervene and secure her release.

The groups said her treatment reflected what they described as a wider policy of isolating Palestinian prisoners, including women. They cited the UN Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners, known as the Nelson Mandela Rules, which define solitary confinement as 22 hours or more a day without meaningful human contact and prolonged solitary confinement as lasting more than 15 consecutive days.

Tawil has been held without charge under administrative detention since February, according to the organisations. She is the daughter of Jamal al-Tawil, a Palestinian administrative detainee who spent years in Israeli prisons.

Palestinian and Israeli rights groups estimate that about 9,500 Palestinians are held in Israeli prisons, including around 90 women and more than 350 children, amid allegations of food deprivation, torture and medical neglect.

Mamdani condemns US role

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani accused the US of “complicity” in the Gaza war, marking the third anniversary of the October 7, 2023 attacks.

Mamdani said the suffering had not begun or ended on that day and cited the Palestinian death toll, including more than 21,000 children.

He criticised US taxpayer funding and arms shipments and called for an end to occupation and apartheid, saying people should work towards a world in which everyone could live with freedom, safety and dignity.

US aircraft losses mount in Iran war

A Congressional Research Service report said at least 81 US fixed-wing, rotary-wing and uncrewed aircraft had been lost or damaged during military operations against Iran.

The figures, compiled from Pentagon records, US Central Command statements, military inspector general findings and press reports, cover incidents recorded since February 28.

The losses included 45 MQ-9 Reaper drones, three MQ-1 aircraft and one MQ-4C Triton.

Twelve F-15E Strike Eagle fighters were affected, including three destroyed by friendly fire over Kuwait, one downed over Iran and eight lightly damaged during an Iranian missile strike on Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan.

Iranian ground fire damaged an F-35A Lightning II, while two A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft were lost or heavily damaged.

The support fleet also suffered losses, including seven KC-135 Stratotanker refuelling aircraft. One crashed in Iraq, killing six crew members, while five were reportedly damaged on the ground in Saudi Arabia.

An E-3 Sentry early-warning aircraft was also hit, while two MC-130J special operations aircraft were intentionally destroyed during a rescue mission and seven military helicopters were lost or damaged.

A September Lead Inspector General report estimated the campaign had cost $33.4 billion through late June, including $3.7 billion in equipment losses. The Congressional Budget Office estimated replacing damaged or destroyed hardware could cost up to $3.3 billion.

The Congressional Research Service warned that the figures could change because of classified information, continuing combat operations and uncertainty over attribution.

Iran signals openness to agreement

Pezeshkian told Putin that an agreement with Washington remained possible if the US adhered to international law. According to the Iranian presidency, the leaders discussed regional developments, Iran-US negotiations and bilateral relations.

Pezeshkian briefed Putin on negotiations mediated by Pakistan and described US “double standards and maximalism” as obstacles to a fair agreement.

He said Iran was prepared to reach a “balanced and fair” deal aimed at securing lasting regional peace and security, while stressing that Tehran’s “red line” was Iran’s national interests and the rights of its people.

Pezeshkian also described Gulf states as Iran’s “brothers” and expressed regret over the use of US military bases there for attacks against Iran.

He said Tehran was ready to cooperate with neighbouring countries on regional peace without outside powers.

Putin reiterated Russia’s support for diplomatic efforts and said Moscow was ready to help find a political settlement. He also stressed the need to respect Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and backed Tehran’s demands for compensation for wartime damage and long-term security guarantees.

Iran and Russia signed a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty in January 2025 covering trade, energy, transport and security.

The US-Israel war with Iran began in late February with attacks on Iran followed by Iranian retaliatory strikes across the region. Washington and Tehran reached an initial agreement in June following mediation by Pakistan and Qatar, but implementation has stalled over disagreements including security and navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
