Germany: 3 seriously injured in axe attack on train

BERLIN (AA): Four people were injured, three seriously, after a man with an axe attacked passengers Monday on a train in southern Germany, according to authorities.

The incident occured at around 9:15 p.m. local time (1915 UTC) on a regional commuter train traveling between the German towns of Treuchlingen and Würzburg. Fourteen passengers were also treated for shock, while one other person sustained light injuries.

The suspect was fatally short by police while trying to flee in Heidingsfeld, a small town near the southern German city of Wurzburg.

Bavaria’s interior minister, Joachim Herrmann, told public television station, ARD, that the suspect was identified as a 17-year-old Afghan migrant.

He said the motive for the attack was not immediately clear and investigators are probing any political connections.
