‘News is not good’: Rushdie’s agent says after author attacked on stage in New York

ANKARA (AA & Agencies): Sir Salman Rushdie is on a ventilator at a hospital and could lose an eye after being stabbed at a theatre in upstate New York Friday, his agent said.

Andrew Wylie, Rushdie’s literary agent, said in a statement late last night that the author was on a ventilator and could not speak. “The news is not good,” he added. “Salman will likely lose one eye; the nerves in his arm were severed; and his liver was stabbed and damaged.”

Police have identified the man suspected of stabbing Rushdie as 24-year-old Hadi Matar of Fairview, New Jersey, who had bought a pass to the event. The motive behind the attack is not known.

Pictures on social media showed Rushdie, whose works have prompted death threats, lying on stage at the Chautauqua Institution as police and bystanders attempted to provide first aid.

Footage also showed bystanders rushing to the stage in the immediate wake of the attack.

The attack took place before a lecture he was about to present.

He was transported to a hospital, New York State Police said in a statement.

An interviewer also added a minor head injury, police.

The attack on Sir Salman was condemned by the US.

US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said: “Today, the country and the world witnessed a reprehensible attack against the writer Salman Rushdie. This act of violence is appalling. All of us in the Biden-Harris Administration are praying for his speedy recovery.”

UK’s national body, The Muslim Council of Britain, also condemned the attack. The MCB tweeted after Rushdie was attacked: “The Muslim Council of Britain condemns the attack on Salman Rushdie. Such violence is wrong and the perpetrator must be brought to justice.”

UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, tweeted: “Appalled that Sir Salman Rushdie has been stabbed while exercising a right we should never cease to defend. Right now my thoughts are with his loved ones. We are all hoping he is okay.”

President of France, Emmanuel Macron, tweeted, “For the last 33 years, Salman Rushdie has symbolised freedom and the fight against obscurantism. Hatred and barbarism have just struck him, so cowardly. His struggle is ours and universal. Today, more than ever, we are at his side.”

Rushdie is the author of several novels that won widespread acclaim, including Midnight’s Children, which won the Booker Prize in 1981.

But his book, “The Satanic Verses,” was the subject of controversy seven years later with late Iranian Ayatullah Ruhollah Khomeini issuing a fatwah calling for his death because of the novel.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Khomeini’s successor, had a tweet deleted in 2019 that said the fatwah remained in place.
