To whom it may concern at Latchmere Leisure Centre, I am writing to you concerning your cleaners, who are members of the United Voices of the World (UVW) union, who are employed by Places for People Leisure Management Ltd (“PPLM”). As you'll be aware, the cleaners are asking for improvements to their rate of pay, sick pay and trade union recognition. At present they receive around £10 per hour. What they’re getting is a certifiable poverty wage, which doesn’t cover the basic cost of living in London and leaves workers below the breadline. The wage that is recognised as allowing workers to make ends meet - and is independently calculated every year to meet the cost of living - is the ‘London Living Wage’(“LLW”) which currently stands £11.05 per hour. Given the RPI inflation rate, which the current living wage did not factor in at the time of calculation, the cleaners request their pay rate be raised to £12.27 per hour, their contracts be amended accordingly and provide a guaranteed annual pay increase in line with the RPI rates of inflation. Please try to avoid a dispute situation and the first strike in the leisure centre’s history. You can instead work together with UVW to ensure the cleaners at Latchmere Leisure Centre get a real living wage, proper sick pay and guaranteed negotiating rights. UVW is available to talk at any time and is open to negotiating a settlement, with or without the services of ACAS. Yours faithfully,
