Zarah Sultana, Labour MP for Coventry South, received the ‘Coventry Legends Award’ from Coventry United Women’s Football Club in recognition of her work as “a committed champion of Coventry” and “for being an amazing female role model”.

“I was very proud to be recognised as a role model for women by a local sports team,” Sultana told The Muslim News after receiving the award. The community award was established last December “to recognise outstanding individuals within Coventry who have excelled in their respective fields or made significant efforts for the community.”

The inaugural winners were journalist Trish Adudu and young club supporters Hattie and Alice Mogan, who spearheaded fundraising efforts to help save the club.

Sultana was presented with the award at halftime at Butts Park Arena on March 25, where Coventry United faced off against rival Birmingham City Women.

Coventry United Women’s Football Club said Sultana was awarded “for the fantastic work that she does for Coventry South, as well as being an amazing female role model.”

Sultana said when receiving the award that she was “hugely honoured” to receive the award and paid tribute to Coventry United for “inspiring young girls and women in the city”.

Jack Heaselden, Coventry United Women’s Football Club General Manager, said: “Born and raised in the West Midlands, Zarah is proud of her working-class upbringing and is a committed champion of Coventry. It gave Coventry United Women the greatest of pleasures to present the Coventry Legends community award to Zarah Sultana MP.”
