Three men have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after 11-year-old Shah Zaib Hossain was killed in a hit-and-run outside Hamza Mosque in Ashton on February 29.
Greater Manchester Police confirmed that two men, including one aged 19, handed themselves in at Ashton-under-Lyne police station. A third man was arrested. Police also confirmed the car did not stop at the scene. Police said one of the men has also been arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit through drink or drugs.
Shah Zaib Hossain died seconds after leaving prayers at his local mosque with his father, Javid Hossain, and uncles.
He was crossing a road behind his uncle and in front of his father when he was hit by the car in Moss Street West at the junction with Mowbray Street in Ashton-under-Lyne at 4.45pm. He was thrown into the air, landing 20 yards away. Javid Hossain described his son as “a lovely caring boy, always happy, jolly, just caring.”
“We said our prayers and my son was in front of me, just a few steps away. He’d not even put his foot on the footpath and he was hurled into the air. I knew then he was gone. My son’s gone.”
Hamza Mosque Imam, Shayful Islam, said the “whole community is in shock and praying for the family.”
He said the boy had “quite happily come out of the mosque. As he crossed the road there was a car driving at a really fast speed and he got run over.”
Sergeant Paul Higgins of the serious collision investigation unit, said: “While we are in the early stages of our investigation we believe the car involved is a dark grey or black Mercedes A or B class and it will have damage to the front nearside headlight.
