JAKARTA (AA) – Up to 55 bodies have been recovered after a passenger boat sank off the Indonesian island of Sulawesi over the weekend, leaving more than 20 people still missing, according to officials Thursday.

A spokesperson for South and West Sulawesi Regional Police said search and rescue teams had recorded the discovery of 95 people among the 118 believed to be on board the vessel – 40 of them alive and 55 dead.

“A lot of victims have been found on Wednesday,” Tempo.co quoted Frans Barung Mangera as saying.

He added that of the 48 bodies recovered Wednesday, 28 bodies were found in East Luwu regency, 13 in the waters of Palopo city and seven in Bone Bay, which opens into the Banda Sea.

The KM Marina had been traveling from Kolaka regency, Southeast Sulawesi province, to Wajo city to the west when it was hit by large waves Saturday afternoon and its crew reported to port authorities that the vessel had begun taking in water.

The deputy head of East Luwu Police said Thursday that a command center has been opened in Wotu subdistrict of East Luwu as a lot of bodies had been found bobbing in nearby waters Wednesday night.

Commissioner Agus Chaerul added that the majority of victims have been spotted by fishermen helping in the search, Tempo.co reported.

Meanwhile, the Search and Rescue Agency in Makassar, the provincial capital of South Sulawesi, has only confirmed the retrieval of 20 bodies.

Indonesia’s waterways serve as a widespread form of transportation in some areas of the country, where accidents resulting from overcrowded boats and lax safety standards are common.
