JERUSALEM (AA): A Palestinian girl, 18, was shot by a Jewish settler on Wednesday near Council Gate (Bab al-Majles), entrance to Jerusalem’s Old City after she allegedly tried to stab him, according to Israeli media reports.
The girl, from Sur Baher in Jerusalem, was seriously wounded in the incident while the Jewish settler sustained moderate injuries, Israeli media reported.
According to Israeli police, the girl was shot by the settler near Old City’s al-Sbat Gate, after which she was taken to Jerusalem’s Hadassah Medical Center.
Palestinian witnesses told Anadolu Agency, however, that girl — who, they said, had not been holding a knife — was attacked without provocation.
Palestinian eyewitnesses said the wounded girl did not carry a knife, or a weapon, and that the Israeli assailant was harassing and insulting her, near Bab al-Majles (The Council Gate) before removing her hijab, covering her head, and shot her when she tried to push him away.
After she threw the settler to the ground, he drew a gun and shot her four times, according to witnesses.
In related news, a Palestinian woman suffered various cuts and bruises in her head and shoulders after the soldiers repeatedly attacked her, in her home, in Batn al-Hawa neighborhood, in Jerusalem’s Silwan town.
The woman, Suad Abu Ramouz, lost consciousness, and was moved to a hospital for treatment, where she regained consciousness, and received six stitches.
The soldiers invaded her home to remove Palestinian flags, raised on its rooftop.
In a related development Wednesday, a young Palestinian man was shot dead by Israeli troops after he reportedly stabbed an Israeli soldier near the Jewish-only Kiryat Gat settlement south of the West Bank city of Hebron.
According to Israeli police, the soldier sustained moderate injuries.
The latest violence comes following an incident on Sunday in which two Israelis and Palestinian were killed in another reported knife attack in Israeli-occupied East Jerusalem.
Ongoing tensions in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem were exacerbated last week by the killing of two Jewish settlers near the Jewish-only Itamar Settlement near the West Bank city of Nablus.
Asked if he was concerned that the escalation in violence could mark the start of a third Intifada, or Palestinian uprising, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said that the U.S. is hopeful “that cooler heads will prevail” but “is deeply concerned about recent violence and escalating tensions in the West Bank and Jerusalem”.
In the past five days, several violent clashes have erupted between Palestinian youths and Israeli troops in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
According to the Palestinian Red Crescent, during the course of the last week alone, two Palestinians have been killed by Israeli gunfire and at least 750 injured.
