Mo Farah became the first British man to win the Great North Run since 1985 on Sept 7 by beating Mike Kigen with a personal best time of one hour and one second. The double Olympic gold medallist held off the challenge of Kenyan long-distance runner Kigen to win his first title on Tyneside, after finishing second last year. Steve Kenyon was the last British winner of the men’s race 29 years ago.

Cricket
Former cricket greats said they fear Pakistan’s one-day defeat in Sri Lanka will hurt preparations for the World Cup just five months away. Pakistan were beaten by seven wickets in the third and final one-day international against Sri Lanka in Dambulla on August 30 after being bowled for a mere 102, losing the three-match series 2-1.


Tennis

Top-seeded Sania Mirza of India and Bruno Soares of Brazil won the US Open mixed doubles after playing together for just two weeks, beating American Abigail Spears and Mexico’s Santiago Gonzalez 6-1, 2-6, 11-9 tiebreak. Mirza has now won three Grand Slam mixed doubles titles.

Football
The 2022 World Cup in Qatar could clash with the Winter Olympics despite FIFA President Sepp Blatter ruling out the idea last year. A FIFA task force set up to examine the options for the staging of the World Cup in the Gulf State met Zurich, at which the dates of January and February 2022 and November and December 2022 were put forward as alternatives to the traditional time slot of June and July. Algeria have suspended all football over a weekend in memory of Albert Ebosse, the striker killed on August 23 after being struck by an object thrown from the crowd during a Ligue 1 match. The Algerian Federation is considering expelling Ebosse’s club JS Kabylie from all competitions. It did not specify a time period.

September Transfers: Hull signed France midfielder Hatem Ben Arfa on a season-long loan deal from Newcastle they also signed Mohamed Diame from West Ham on a three-and-a-half-year contract. Stoke City have completed the £1million season-long loan signing of Oussama Assaidi from Liverpool. The 26-year-old Moroccan spent last season on loan at the Britannia Stadium. Midfielder Karim El Ahmadi has left Aston Villa to rejoin former club Feyenoord for an undisclosed fee. Leeds have signed on-loan striker Souleymane Doukara on a three-year contract. The Senegal striker was on a season-long loan from Italian club Catania.
