Representatives from the World Governing body for Pencak Silat (PERSILAT) and the Championships Organising Committee from Thailand gave a presentation about forthcoming martial art event in London on September 25. The 2015 Pencak Silat World Championships will be held in Phuket, Thailand, in January. Over 51 countries will participate in the event.
“This martial art tournament will be the biggest ever held with athletes from 47 countries, including the UK participating between January 7 to 17, 2015”, said Consultant for Pencak Silat Association of Thailand, Assistant Professor Kasem Benchawong. Pencak Silat, the martial art featured in cult hits the Raid and The Raid 2, is one of the fastest growing sport in Europe, with clubs in almost 20 countries.
Pencak Silat (PS) is an Asian fighting art developed hundreds of years ago in Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore. It is originally martial art of Indonesia. It is also practiced in the Thai southern border province of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwa.
In Indonesia PS is also used to train people endurance and making them fit to go to Hajj.
“PS is not only about fighting but has also artistic movements. Movements are very deep, flowery and rhythmical. It is also about building inner strength. It is holistic in its approach,” said head of Pencak Silat in the UK, Aidinal Alrashid.
He added that PS develops a person a healthy in mind, body and spirit, harmony with one self and the surrounding at once.
PS inculcates good values in a person and so is useful to himself, his family, community and society. It builds a strong character with sound principles.
Family spirit is a very important component in PC compared to other martial arts.
PS is deadly and effective but never harsh. The movement is with grace and beauty, it is harmonious.
Chief Executive Officer of Singapore Silat Federation, Sheik Alau’ddin Yacoob Marican, said International Pancak Silat Federation wants PS to be accepted as a sport in the Olympics. “Our target in 2024 Olympics as it is important PS is put in the world sporting arena,” he said.
