Poets’ Corner: Struggle with the Self

The believer, assailed by two forces,
One from within, the other, without,
An inborn struggle from the first
Day we remember
In trying to seek nearness to Allah (swt).

The outer force, Shaytaan,
Targets us, time and again,
From one attempt to another,
To throw us down, hopeless and thwarted,
Plunging us into self-doubt
And question our imaan.
That is his aim.

Each person has a Shaytaan to grapple with,
But his soul has a battle of its own.
If neglected, diseases in the heart multiply,
Coating it with layers of rust, thick,
Rendering the Light of Allah
Impossible to penetrate.

Vices of the heart need to be erased
In the purification of the soul.
The more our desires are fed,
Material and physical,
Countless our wants will become.
The name of this vice, greed.
And an offshoot from this, luxury,
– a product of modern culture
Where happiness equates with the piling of material wealth.

Anger, hatred, jealousy and envy,
These form other potent vices
Of the heart
Destroying inner peace
Directing one to vengeance
And away from Allah (swt).
The remedy?
To sleep with a clean heart
As the practice of Rasool (saw).
For anger is forbidden.

The mother of bad traits, arrogance,
Feel others are below us
Think we own the earth
When we have been sent as
Vicegerents of Allah (swt)
To protect and cherish it
And spread His Word.
Our good deeds elevate us.
Nothing else.

If left unaddressed,
These and more vices will propagate
Until one day
In the mirror, a monster looks back at us.
Islam, no doubt is salaah and the four other pillars,
But Ihsan is the rectification and purification of the self,
The drawing nearer to the Most Perfect, Allah (swt).
