XX Commonwealth Games, Glasgow, Scotland, (July 23 – August 3)

Twenty nine Muslim athletes (18 men and 11 female) won medals in the Commonwealth Games. Malaysia has topped the table of Muslim winners with 11 medallists, followed by Nigeria and PAKistan with four medallists apiece. A total of 5 gold’s, 9 silver’s and 15 Bronze’s were won by Muslim athletes in boxing (4), road cycling (1), diving (1) rhythmic gymnastics (1), judo (2), lawn bawls (5), power lifting (3), shooting (4), table tennis (1), weightlifting (3) and wrestling (4).

Athletics

European Championship, Zurich – Switzerland: Mo Farah won back his European 10,000m title as his fellow Briton Andy Vernon snatched a fine silver.

Farah went to the front with 600m to go and opened out as always at the bell, but only in the final 60m did he get rid of Turkey’s Ali Kaya before Vernon’s late surge. Farah now has five European golds .

 

Cricket

Moeen Ali has been central to England’s amazing comeback in their Test series against India.

He took six wickets in the second innings to bowl England to victory in Southampton and another four at Old Trafford on Aug 9 to help bowl India out for 161 and put England 2-1 up in the series with one match to play.

 

Football
Summer transfers: Everton have signed Ferencvaros midfielder Muhamed Besic. The 21-year-old, who played in all of Bosnia-Hercegovina’s matches at the World Cup, has agreed a five-year deal. He joined Everton’s pre-season tour of Thailand last week prior to their friendly with Leicester.

Barca midfielder Ibrahim Afellay will join Greek champs Olympiakos on loan. The Dutchman has struggled to establish himself at the Nou Camp after suffering a bad knee injury in Sept 2011.

Sunderland midfielder El-Hadji Ba has joined French Ligue 1 club Bastia on a season-long loan, while MK Dons have signed midfielder Samir Carruthers from Aston Villa for an undisclosed fee, following his loan spell at the club last season.

Tennis
Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci of Italy continue their domination of the WTA doubles tour. The first seeds defeated fourth seeds Cara Black of Zimbabwe and Sania Mirza of India in two sets (7-6 (4), 6-3) to win the WTA Rogers Cup in Montreal.
