One Ummah different Eids?

25th Oct 2013

Sirs, It is really unfortunate that the Muslims of UK are once again divided with the moon sighting news from Saudi Arabia and other nearby countries (such Morocco, South Africa etc) for Dhul Hijjah 1434 AH. Which means, yet again we will witness the day of Eid-ul Adha being celebrated over two days, i.e. Tuesday and Wednesday 15th and 16th October 2013 instead of one day.

Previously attempts to unite the UK Muslims on one unified moon sighting criteria has not been successful, as some people find it extremely difficult to accept the fact that the Saudi Ummul Qura calendar may not match the visibility of the moon. Therefore, it would be most useful if we can persuade the Saudi authorities to upgrade their Ummul Qura calendar criteria to match the actual visibility of the moon, which will minimise the difference with actual sighting by the human eye from nearby countries and hence facilitate greater unity.

Therefore, the “Islamic Crescent Observation for the UK” group have recently launched an

Ummul Qura Change Petition for One Eid and we hope your readers will support it by signing it online, Insha-Allah. Further details can be found on

Qamar Uddin, York (UK)
