Muslim role in fight against Apartheid South Africa an eye opener

31st Jan 2014

Sir, I never knew that Muslims in South Africa were involved in anti Apartheid movement and were working closely with Nelson Mandela against the White racists. They even shared his cell on the notorious RobbenIsland. He even used Muslim homes as safe houses when he was on the run from the Apartheid regime security forces.

Mandela used to visit the shrine of Tuan Sayed Abduragman Motura on the RobbenIsland where he found solace.

He paid tribute to Muslims who died while in detention in South Africa as they resisted repression policies of racist South African regime (The Muslim News 296).

Muslims of South Africa make us proud in their active participation of the freedom movement in the country.

We should emulate them and campaign against Apartheid regime of Israel who are treating Palestinians like the racist regime of South Africa treated its non-White people. As he beautifully said, quoted in your editorial, “We know too well that our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of the Palestinians.”

Yours,

Fatima Omar
