Sir, George Galloway MP, was brutally assaulted in broad daylight on a central London street, allegedly for his lifelong support of the Palestinian cause and his forceful condemnation of Israel for its recent crimes in Gaza.
The incident was briefly reported in the media but no public figure or fellow MP has commented, leave alone support, a MP’s right to free speech without fear of being physically assaulted by a member of public.
This is a sad occasion for British democracy and its relevance to the alienation of young British Muslims from the mainstream of public life in our country cannot be under estimated. The assailant of Mr Galloway being a British Jew has advantages in public life not available had the assailant been a mere citizen. The sword of Damocles, in the shape of Anti-Semitic label, seals the lips of otherwise vociferous champions of democracy amongst us.
