Boots on the ground in Iraq

29th Aug 2014

Sir, Brilliant interview with former Chief of Defences Staff. Lord David Richards. It was quite a wide ranging interview. You covered UK war in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria and now with ISIS. The rise of ISIS today is due to the policies of US and UK in the region.

As Lord David says the 2003 Iraqi invasion “liberated forces that we’re still seeing playing out today.” He warned that there was a great risk that Iraq would be divided and that would create instability in the country. However, Lord David said UK did not have a clear strategy on the rise of ISIS nor did the US. How right he is.

We can see the mess we have created in Iraq and Syria and will soon engulf the region. The repercussions will be felt in this country and the US.

His view that the UK will in future have boots on the ground in the Muslim countries is correct. It may be sooner than he thinks as ISIS cannot be defeated by bombing from air alone. We’ll be back into Iraq sooner than we thought.

Yours,
