On January 3, police announced they were investigating an Islamophobic incident in London in which a man allegedly spat at and made Islamophobic remarks towards a woman.

The incidents both took place on November 23. The first occurred at around 9:50am on a route 259 bus on Seven Sisters Road, which joins Holloway with south Tottenham. A man verbally abused a fellow passenger.

According to a spokesperson for the Met Police: “Passengers on the bus intervened after the man, who made Islamophobic remarks to the woman, advanced towards her raising his hand as though he was going to hit her. The bus driver stopped the bus and ordered the man off.”

In a subsequent incident, police were called to a further scene on Seven Sisters Road: “Whereby a 38-year-old man matching the description of the suspect in the first incident allegedly spat at a woman after he had racially abused her and made Islamophobic remarks,” according to a police spokesperson.

The man was arrested on suspicion of religiously and racially aggravated public order offences.

A spokesperson for the Met Police said that the man has been bailed pending further inquiries.
