Variations on the name Muhammad have shown to be the second most popular boys’ name in England and Wales last year, according to figures released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
Three different spellings of the name appeared in the ONS’s top 100 names for boys.
The first most common is Muhammad, which is in 19th place on the table.
Mohammed comes 26th and Mohammad is in 60th place.
But overall the name was given 7,139 times in 2012, just 29 behind Harry – which took the top spot.
There were 12 variations of Prophet Muhammad’s name last year; meaning that the other variations outside the 100 could have pushed the name on top of the list.
Since 1999 the number of babies called Muhammad, however spelt, has increased by almost half. In 1999 the name was given 4,579 newborns.
Going even further back, the single spelling Mohammed appeared at 73rd in the list in 1964 and 87th in 1944.
