Celebrating inspiring Muslims

24th Apr 2015

The Muslim News staged yet another successful awards event recognising the inspiring Muslims’ unsung heroes. The event was the thirteenth award ceremony with Leader of the Labour Party, Ed Miliband, as the guest of honour.

Details about the latest The Muslim News Awards for Excellence and the achievement of the unsung heroes and heroines can be read about in these pages. As the Editor of The Muslim News, Ahmed J Versi said, “With the huge focus on bad news stories when it comes to Islam and British Muslims, it is all the more important that we recognise those Muslims among us who are doing great things to transform the lives of their communities and society…And we should do so because their achievements are rarely highlighted as good news stories in our media.”

How true it is that the media refuses to highlight the good news stories about the Muslim community and continues with its negative portrayal.

Channel 4 TV News recently argued that there were not many female Muslim role models to highlight. How wrong they are. We have a huge database of Muslim women who have and are excelling in this country. We have showcased them since year 2000 but the media like C4 are just not interested. To the contrary the media in this country is mainly interested in reporting negative stories of the Muslim community. No wonder there is an increase in Islamophobia and Islamophobic attacks.

However, despite this, The Muslim News awards event was able to reach a wide audience using social media.
